Middle of Nowhere

Stardate 11/7/11
I suppose now is as good a time to put my feelings down on paper(or rubber),whatever,,regarding Arsenal.
Being an Arsenal gooner is an unusual expierence in a lot of ways,a kind of tramplolining of the senses in your travails of supporting and cheering on your beloved team.
We as gooners are not like other supporters as we have to work hard at maintaining our love and belief in what goes on in the world of wenger
It was never always this intresting to be a gooner,,,i remember the dark days of  Don Howe and early George Graham,,which leads me to the name of the blog "Guscaesarsmate".
To the uninitated Augustus Caesar epitiomises everything i like about Arsenal,,ups downs and the sublimely feckin ridiculous.
Here was a guy who broke into the Arsenal team in late 1985,,in a team with Niall Quinn,,Charlie Nicholas and the great Tony Adams ,,Augustus (Gus) was a limited player ,but he had heart,,he kept you on the edge of your seat and if he and Arsenal got through the game with a result ,you felt as if you had defended alongside him, kicking and clearing every ball.
Gus kept his place on and off for about 3 seasons drifting in and out ,but never out of our thoughts(nightmares) until that fateful day at Wembley against Luton town.
This was the day that Gus became a legend, the forces that day conspired to send our hero catapulting into oblivion in a footballing sense.
Defending in a manner that would make the great Igor Stepanovs seem like a cross between Franco Baresi and Franz friggin Beckenbauer.
But that wasnt the point sure we lost,,and lost to a Luton Town side who couldnt believe their luck in coming up against such quality, but can you name anyone from that Luton Town league cup winning side of 1988(sealey,preece,mark stein, brian stein, ashley grimes, mick harford, danny wilson etc..)
Ok,,so the names are etched and burned into my pysche but Gus is the 1 that always remains and is an example of the roller coaster that is supporting Arsenal.
We so love the highs,,but deep down we kinda like the lows.
till next time
